Dr. Maria Martini is organising the First International Workshop on Cross-Layer Operation Aided Multimedia Streaming in conjunction with the OPTIMIX FP7 EU project. Co-located with IEEE VTC Spring 2011.

Budapest, Hungary, 15th—18th May 2011

For more information click here
Workshop Objectives
The object of the workshop is to discuss innovative solutions enabling enhanced video streaming for
point to point and point to multi-point transmissions in an IP based wireless heterogeneous system,
based on cross layer adaptation of the whole transmission chain. Many areas of improvements
classified in the following in four categories are considered in the workshop: i) applications for content
delivery; ii) networking; iii) radio access; iv) cross-layer solutions. Indeed, today’s approach, relying on
traditional separation approaches and focussing on services delivered over homogeneous networks,
does not allow to meet the on-going demands to maintain the required Quality of Service (QoS) for each
of the users, who have different needs and requirements. This workshop looks into solutions allowing
the applicability of a cross-layer design approach to the end-to-end multimedia streaming.

Workshop Topics:
– Cross-layer design
– Multimedia streaming over wireless networks
– Quality assessment
– Point to multipoint video communication
– Signaling for cross-layer communication
– System adaptation and control
– Media adaptation to wireless delivery
– Wireless network adaptation for video streaming
– Radio resource allocation for heterogeneous traffic
– Error Correction for video applications

Dr. Maria Martini of the WMN Group is organising the IEEE Workshop on Streaming and Media Communication (StreamComm 2011) in conjunction with IEEE ICME 2011

Barcelona, Spain, July 11, 2011

To visit the website click here

Increased connectivity and processing power of end-user devices create opportunities for development of new media streaming applications in addition to traditional video and audio services, such as online gaming, telemedicine, interactive arts, immersive environments, etc. At the same time, user demands are growing beyond the basic delivery of media to their devices. Media presentation, personalization, and relevance, are all increasingly important factors for device manufacturers and service providers. StreamComm 2011 is intended to be a dissemination and discussion platform for latest research ideas and results in media streaming and related Quality of Experience (QoE) issues. As such, StreamComm 2011 should be of interest to researchers from both industry and academia.

Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE ICME 2011 proceedings, and will be made available through IEEE digital library. Please visit the section on “Paper submission” for further details. Topics of interest include:

Media coding, decoding, and processing for streaming applications

Media synchronization, playback, and buffer management

Wired and wireless architectures for media streaming

Protocols for media streaming

ClaD, “Wireless Transmission of Medical Video through Cross-layer Design”, Faculty of Computing, Information Systems and Mathematics, QR Research Fellowship, M.G. Martini and C. Politis, Duration 36 months (2009)

Medical video streaming over wireless channels is a challenging area due to the requirement for high fidelity to avoid loss of information that could help diagnosis, and due to the limitation on bandwidth of the wireless channel. In considering transmission over IP based wireless networks, an end-to-end cross-layer methodology which consists of the joint design across the classically separated OSI protocol layers is beneficial. Based on this insight, the aim of the project is to enable real-time delivery of diagnostic quality medical video over wireless/mobile channels utilising a cross-layer approach employing closed-loop on-line adaptation of the transmission system.

The theme of the meeting will be:

Wireless for the Next Generation

With the burgeoning demand for content delivered over mobile broadband networks, the potential explosion of wireless sensor networks predicted by WWRF’s vision, and the debate on the future architecture of the Internet, now is the time to bring together visions and research results that can guide the definition of the next generation of wireless communication.

In addition to this overarching theme, WWRF has defined four specific themes to study in 2010, and contributions are particularly welcome of each of these areas:

• Green Radio
• The Internet of Things
• The Unwired Office
• Wireless Communication for Emerging Market
